Open letter: 35 social justice and human rights groups call on CBC/Radio-Canada to withdraw from Eurovision 2027

Marie-Philippe Bouchard,
President and CEO
CBC/Radio-Canada,
Madame:
On behalf of a broad coalition of social justice and human rights groups from across the country, we write to express our disappointment and frustration regarding the CBC/Radio-Canada’s decision to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. We strongly urge you to cancel your participation in the competition.
As you know, the United Nations Human Rights Council concluded in a June 2026 report that Israel has been actively committing genocide in Gaza since October 2023, deliberately destroying critical health, sanitation, food, and education infrastructure as well as killing more than 73,000 Palestinians, including tens of thousands of children and hundreds of journalists. That same report concluded that “Israel has been sheltered from accountability” through its participation in global cultural events such as Eurovision.
As you know, in 2022 the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) indefinitely banned Russia from participation in Eurovision because of its invasion of Ukraine, yet it has thus far refused to take a consistent stand against Israel’s crimes. Amnesty International said earlier this year, “The failure of the EBU to suspend Israel from Eurovision, as it did with Russia, is an act of cowardice and an illustration of blatant double standards when it comes to Israel.”
As you know, since 2024, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), a founding member of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, has called for a boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest for as long as the EBU allows Israel to participate. This led to the withdrawal of Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain from the 2026 edition of the competition, and the loss of at least 35 million viewers around the world. As you know Ireland has already announced it will not participate in Eurovision 2027, nor will the Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS, who called the competition “a platform for division.”
We are appalled that the CBC/Radio-Canada has chosen to participate in the Eurovision competition at this particular time, effectively normalizing Israel’s genocide, occupation and apartheid. As evidenced in the reaction to recent censorship of Macklemore by Zionist funders, solidarity with Palestine is not a fringe position. It is the baseline for ethical and moral fortitude in the face of ongoing settler-colonial violence.
We call on you to have the courage to join the right side of history and cancel CBC/Radio-Canada’s participation in Eurovision.
Sincerely,

Marie-Philippe Bouchard
Présidente-directrice générale
CBC/Radio-Canada
Madame,
Cordialement,
