Musicians For Palestine Montreal

More than 120 Montreal musicians and music institutions join the cultural boycott of apartheid Israel

We all know Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians. We know the conflict didn’t start on 07 October 2023, and we know it didn’t end with the so-called ceasefire. We know that the existence of the state of Israel is only possible because of the dispossession of the Palestinians, and that until there is justice there will never be peace. We know which is the right side of history.

We are Musicians For Palestine Montréal, a group of Montreal-based musicians and music industry workers, and we’re part of a growing international network of people of conscience who are standing up against this madness. We understand that musicians and other cultural workers have a specific and crucial role to play in movements fighting for social justice.

Today we are sharing a list of 89 artists, musicians, and cultural workers, and 34 music institutions (lists follow), who have officially signed on to support the cultural boycott against the state of Israel.

In practice, this means we refuse to perform in apartheid Israel; we refuse to accept funding from Israel, its lobby groups, or other institutions complicit in Israel’s crimes; and we refuse to collaborate on cultural projects that seek to normalize genocide and apartheid.

As creative workers, we refuse to contribute our labour to efforts to whitewash settler-colonialism and genocide. As performers, we refuse to allow our stages to platform racist, anti-Arab and Islamophobic propaganda. As creators, we refuse to allow occupation and war to profit from the art we produce. As Montrealers, we refuse to allow our city to be a safe harbour for genocidaires. As human beings, we refuse to remain silent.

As was demonstrated by the musicians who stood up against apartheid in South Africa, a cultural boycott of Israel is not only an appropriate and historically proven tactic, it’s an ethically necessary one. We are coming together to collectively refuse complicity, and we invite our fellow musicians, artists, and other cultural workers in Montreal to join us.

Nous savons tous qu'Israël commet un génocide contre les Palestiniens. Nous savons que le conflit n'a pas commencé le 7 octobre 2023 et qu'il ne s'est pas terminé avec le soi-disant cessez-le-feu. Nous savons que l'existence de l'État d'Israël n'est possible que grâce à la dépossession des Palestiniens et que tant qu'il n'y aura pas de justice, il n'y aura jamais de paix. Nous savons quel est le bon côté de l'histoire.

Nous sommes Musicians For Palestine Montréal, un groupe de musicien.ne.s et de travailleur.euse.s de l'industrie musicale basés à Montréal, et nous faisons partie d'un réseau international croissant de personnes de conscience qui s'opposent à cette folie. Nous comprenons que les musiciens et autres travailleur.euse.s culturels ont un rôle spécifique et crucial à jouer dans les mouvements qui luttent pour la justice sociale.

Aujourd'hui, nous partageons une liste de 89 artistes, musicien.ne.s et travailleur.euse.s culturel.le.s, ainsi que 34 institutions musicales (listes ci-dessous), qui ont officiellement signé pour soutenir le boycott culturel contre l'État d'Israël.

Concrètement, cela signifie que nous refusons de nous produire dans l'État d'apartheid qu'est Israël, que nous refusons d'accepter des financements provenant d'Israël, de ses groupes de pression ou d'autres institutions complices des crimes d'Israël, et que nous refusons de collaborer à des projets culturels qui cherchent à normaliser le génocide et l'apartheid.

En tant que travailleur.euse.s créatifs, nous refusons de contribuer par notre travail à des efforts visant à blanchir le colonialisme et le génocide. En tant qu'artistes, nous refusons que nos scènes servent de tribune à la propagande raciste, anti-arabe et islamophobe. En tant que créateur.trice.s, nous refusons que l'occupation et la guerre tirent profit de l'art que nous produisons. En tant que Montréalais.es, nous refusons que notre ville soit un refuge pour les génocidaires. En tant qu'êtres humains, nous refusons de rester silencieux.

Comme l'ont démontré les musicien.ne.s qui se sont élevés contre l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud, un boycott culturel d'Israël n'est pas seulement une tactique appropriée et historiquement éprouvée, c'est aussi une nécessité éthique. Nous nous unissons pour refuser collectivement toute complicité, et nous invitons nos collègues musicien.ne.s, artistes et autres travailleur.euse.s culturel.le.s de Montréal à se joindre à nous.
